Autobiographical Statement

Many years ago in my late teens I bought an old record player and some beat records from a thrift store. When I realized the needle didn’t work I scrounged some acrylic paints and began doing spin art on the records. This sent me on many years wandering through paint, collage, assemblage, and sculpture in many media until I found my favorite. Borosilicate glass flows like honey when molten, is strong and durable when cool, and achieves amazing color combinations with different metals. My goal as an artist is to draw the viewer outside of their cluttered thoughts and bring them to a point of personal reflection. Technical precision is only important in that once many techniques are mastered, an artist can effortlessly convey a feeling or emotion. Thus, beauty and pure thought pour out of each piece as opposed to mechanical technique. This is why my work varies so much even within one genre.

Product Statement

Most of my art objects are colored with 24 carat gold and fine silver through a process called fuming. Fuming is a process similar to steam rising out of boiling water. If you hold a cool plate over steaming water the steam will condense on the plate- so it is with fuming. I take a small piece of 24K gold or fine silver and attach it to a small rod of clear glass then place it in the hot flame. The precious metals get so hot they actually fume (steam) and I hold another piece of glass further back. The fume rides the flame and sticks to this other piece of glass. Most of my coloring is done this way but i occasionally use pre-made glass colors. The whites and light blues (a halo effect) are silver fumed, the pinks and oranges are gold fumed and the yellows and greens are a blend of gold and silver.

Artist's Statement

Through glass, I have found an art that will grow with me for a lifetime. In university, I enjoyed the three dimensional space of sculpture and the importance of colors in painting. Combining these two medium's qualities, glass has given me the chance to explore new creative possibilities. For almost six years, I have sculpted glass into functional and nonfunctional works of art. My jewelry, marbles, wine glasses, vases and sculptures are sold at galleries throughout the west. Internal Fire is the exchange of energy between the artist and the collector. This energy has allowed me to create intimate art for you to enjoy!
